Adventures in fund-raising for children (as seen in Peace Arch News)

Thursday, August 26th, 2010

What began as a two-person effort in last year’s Adventure Challenge has grown into a solid team of seven, after more Peninsula women caught wind of the September fundraiser and jumped onboard.

The Canuck Place Adventure Challenge

Wednesday, August 18th, 2010

Three years ago I began volunteering at Canuck Place Children’s Hospice, the first free standing children’s hospice in North America. Despite the reason for its existence, the hospice is a place filled with laughter, encouragement and peace (with the occasional sound of children’s footsteps thundering overhead). The wood floors of the Shaugnessy mansion and thick wood beams are dented and chipped by wheelchairs racing past or kids playing with toys that cause wear that makes this house a home.

Fitness Town & Salvation Army “Back to School Backpack Drive”

Saturday, July 31st, 2010

Fitness Town is extremely happy to have the opportunity to once again participate in partnership with Staples and Starbucks to assist the Salvation Army with the Back to School Backpack Drive. Every September, single-parent and low-income families struggle to equip their children for a new school year. The Salvation Army supports these families by distributing donated school supplies. To handle the increased demand, from August 1st to September 15th, all Lower Mainland Fitness Town, Staples and downtown Vancouver Starbucks locations collect donations, back packs and school supplies for children in need, through The Salvation Army.

The Ride To Conquer Cancer: My experiences

Wednesday, June 30th, 2010

It’s funny and typical for me to do something at the very LAST minute. When I heard about the Ride to Conquer Cancer I thought “ya right why would I put myself through all of that pain and training, just donate some money and call it a day?” Then I thought about all of the friends that I had lost to cancer over the last 15 years and I felt compelled to take the challenge… little did I know what I was getting into. From the start to finish and everything in between, it was an amazing journey that consisted of 1 border crossing, 2 days of riding a total of 500 km, 5 miles of up hill riding, 11,600 calories burned and $6500 raised in donations… and of course, one especially sore butt. This was The Ride to Conquer Cancer.

Reboot those New Year’s resolutions: Jump-start a stalled fitness program with the Fitness Town 90-day Challenge

Saturday, March 20th, 2010

Did you make a new year’s resolution to get in shape? We’re ten weeks into the year and if you feel like you’ve already failed, you’re not alone. Studies have shown that it takes about four weeks to form a new habit and following the excesses of the holiday season it can be even more difficult. By the beginning of March, most have failed to maintain a program and many people will wait the rest of the year to try again. It’s time to break the cycle – by getting on it.
