Supplement Review: Protica protein shakes, drinks, shots, treats, candy

Protein is one of the three macronutrients. We need protein as they are the building blocks of all the tissues in our body. It also takes more energy for us to digest protein, therefore we burn more calories when we eat protein.

Supplement Question: How much protein should I be taking?

Question: How much protein should I be taking?

This is a difficult question to answer since protein intake is based on a number of different criteria. Traditionally, recommendations have been based on bodyweight: one gram of protein per pound of bodyweight a day is a common recommendation. This recommendation is probably fine for most individuals who partake in typical year-round training; however, blanket recommendations for protein intake can sometimes be inaccurate when individuals have skewed bodyweight, like high body fat. Therefore, basing protein requirements on lean body mass (LBM) may be a more accurate method.

FT Q&A: Why should I take Omega 3 fatty acids?

Omega-3 and omega-6 are essential fatty acids, which means they are not produced naturally by the body and must be consumed through the food we eat. Generally, it is easy for most people to consume enough omega 6 fats; they are found in plant oils and factory raised animals. However, it is difficult for people in Western countries to get enough omega-3 fats from dietary sources. We eat a lot more processed foods and a lot less wild game and plants than our ancestors did. We evolved with a fat intake ratio of about 1:1 omega-3 to omega-6 fatty acids. Now the ratio is closer to 20:1! This ratio is important because both omega-3s and omega-6s compete for space in the cell membranes as well as the attention of enzymes. Many experts suggest that this ratio is actually more important than the overall amount of omega 3 that is consumed. This is why supplementing omega 3l is so important.
