Your brain is a really hot piece of real estate that sits between your ears. It’s an amazing lump of tissue that performs more complex tasks than the world’s best computers. Knowing a bit about how your brain works can assist you to think differently and be more aware about things. And as we all know, awareness is a key step to change.
Biologists used to think that neurotransmitters (chemicals that transmit signals in the brain) were confined to the brain. Now research has proven that these chemicals are constantly running throughout your whole body. And what’s more, they perform an important role in creating and maintaining your cellular memory.
What does a neurotransmitter do exactly? It allows your brain cells (called neurons) and all other cells in your body to communicate. Every thought causes a certain neurotransmitter to be released in the brain and transmit that message to your body. When you think happy thoughts or sad or angry thoughts, the corresponding neurotransmitters are then sent out into your brain and your being. Every cell in your body has receptors for these neurotransmitters. (The movie What The Bleep has great animation that explains this.)
What scientists have discovered is that when a cell receives a certain type of neurotransmitter, let’s say anger; when that cell dies and is replaced by a new cell, that new cell has twice as many receptors for anger chemicals. It takes your body roughly a year to regenerate all its cells. If you are constantly thinking anger, sadness, frustration, or other negative emotions your cells become receptive to only those chemicals. If you think these thoughts for long enough in your life it’s no wonder you can’t perceive any positive emotions. Your cells simply have no way of recognizing them because they have no receptors for happy, empowering, or excited neurotransmitters.
It also works the other way and explains why some people can be perpetually grumpy and others are always happy. Positive people still hit obstacles but they are literally programmed down to the cellular level to focus on the good in everything and adjust their course of action. Chronically negative people can’t find happiness because their cellular memories don’t recognize the happy neurotransmitters unless the emotions are cleared up at the subconscious level.
The fact that your body regenerates itself within one year is great news! Many parts of your body regenerate much faster which means that once you decide to change and release past hurts and other negative emotions you can feel better very quickly. You can begin to focus on what you want instead of always feeling down. There are many modalities that easily and quickly release negativity and allow for more positive flow of neurotransmitters and reconditioning of cellular memory. It’s a matter of choosing one that works for you and giving yourself permission to release the past.
