You experience the world through your 5 senses. Your conscious mind processes only a fraction of the total information that surrounds you at any given moment in time. The rest is filtered by your subconscious mind according to what it’s been conditioned to focus on. Perception through our deeply ingrained subconscious filters explains why two people can attend the same event or read the same book and have totally different recollections of it.
When you want to break loose of your past you can experience struggles unless your subconscious filters are cleaned up. The reason for this is that the information that is allowed to pass through your filters influences your view of your world, your emotional state, and your physiology. These three in turn cause your behaviours.
For example, studies have shown that negative people may perceive excitement as anger. Positive people would perceive excitement as just that, a happy and energetic state of being. Consider how differently you would behave if you perceived an excited person to be angry versus if you perceived them to be happy.
It doesn’t mean one perception is right and one is wrong, it just means that when you change your perceptions you change your experience of the world.
For example, did you learn as a child that crossing your arms across your chest indicates that you’re angry because that’s what your parents always did when they were cross with you? Now every time you see someone with their arms crossed you experience the same reactions that you experienced when your parents were angry with you. Your subconscious is programmed to perceive crossed arms = anger. In reality, the person with crossed arms may be feeling cold and trying to warm up their body or that’s just a comfortable position for them to hold their hands. They may not be angry at all. Think about how differently you would behave around this person if, instead of perceiving them as being angry about something, you would perceive them as being comfortable.
Do you have perceptions of the world do you have that are impacting your success? Or perhaps you hold certain beliefs about what you can and can’t do? About what’s possible or impossible for you?
Consider what how your life would change if you believed you could accomplish any goal you set in this area of your life. What is the first step you would take if you believed you could do anything?
