Although Beach Weather is Disappearing, Your Vitamin D Levels Don’t Have to.

Fall beachI have always been a lover of spending the day at the beach and soaking in the sun, however with fall here and winter approaching the sun is soon becoming a treat instead of a habit. Although less sun exposure means less sunburns,  it can also mean a decreasing amount of Vitamin D.

Before writing this post, I knew a little bit about the importance of specific vitamins, but very few specifically. After reasearching the benefits of Vitamin D, I was suprised to learn how many important roles it playsin our bodies; for example, Vitamin D aids in calcium balance within your body, helps boost your immunity which is so important during the season changes, and also aids in cell differentiation.

Vitamin D however can be difficult to get the daily reccomendation solely through food. However common foods that contain Vitamin D are:
- Salmon
- Tuna
- Mackerel
- Orange Juice
- Milk
- Eggs

However, Vitamin D is a difficult vitamin to get the daily recommended dose simply from food, many doctors do reccomend taking a supplement to ensure that your are getting the full benefits. After all the reasearch, I feel it’s time to welcome fall because with proper supplementation I’m not losing out on anything.

About Brittany

Born and raised in B.C, with the easy going attitude you’d expect, Brittany works between our Surrey and Port Coquitlam locations. Although Brittany is the shortest member of the Fitness Town team, she makes up for it with her outgoing personality. Spending her childhood competing in track and field and swimming, she learned the importance of an active lifestyle very young. Although Brittany was always an athlete, she does understand both sides of fitness. After a serious car accident in 2007, Brittany’s fitness goals were changed from maintenance to recovery. When not working, Brittany enjoys keeping saltwater reef tanks, learning languages and spending time with friends in a local coffee shop. No matter what your goal or level of fitness, come see Brittany with your fitness needs, she’ll be happy to find you a solution.

I’m in Northern New England and have been trying my best to take a proactive approach this year to vitamin D — eating lots of wild salmon, taking a Cod Liver Oil supplement, getting sun… So, we’ll see what happens when winter kicks into high gear. A good article on this that I’ll pass along (it was helpful to me in figuring out what to do) is this one from the Women to Women Clinic in Maine… Is vitamin D deficiency casting a cloud over your health? . the advice applies equally well to women and men, imo.
