Watching Salt Intake? Make your own HEALTHY PIZZA

According to Stats Canada, Canadians consume a large amount of sodium. Although some sodium is needed to control blood volume and to help cells function properly, most Canadians consume far more than is necessary, or recommended. Most sodium is consumed as sodium chloride, usually called “table salt.” Processed foods are the main source, accounting for 77% of average daily sodium intake. Another 12% occurs naturally in foods, and salt added during cooking (6%) or at the table (5%) makes up the remainder. For further information on sodium intake go to the Stats Canada website.
Did you know that 1 slice of Pepperoni Lover’s stuffed crust pizza has 1330 mg of sodium. If you were to have 3 slices for dinner you would have exceded the recommended limit for daily sodium intake by 2490 mg in just one meal. While restaurants need to be more accountable for the foods they serve, we need to be better educated about what we are ordering and eating on a regular basis. Did you know that many of the big restaurant chains provide nutrition information on the web? Did you know that you can ask the chef not to add salt to your meal? Of course this only works to a certain extent as many meats are marinaded and sauces are prepared in large batches.
When you are shopping for groceries try to stear away from pre-packaged meals or learn to read the labels. 1/6 of a Kraft Delissio Pizzeria Style Pepperoni Pizza has 940 mg of sodium. Once again, 3 slices puts you over the top by 1320 mg for the day.
You can make your own pizza that is healthier than the restaurant or packaged version with just a little planning…
1. Purchase low sodium pizza sauce in the organic foods section of your local grocery store.
2. Use turkey or veggie pepperoni for a low fat version of the original.
3. Use whole wheat dough for the crust or use whole wheat pita bread to make it quick and easy.
4. Low fat cheese should be used in moderation.
5. Add lots of your favourite veggies and be creative.
